The University Of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Introduce
When it comes to specialized medical care in New Mexico, The University Of New Mexico Health Sciences Center stands as a prominent institution, offering a wide range of services including a dedicated Department of Dermatology. For residents of Albuquerque and beyond, this department is often the first point of contact for complex and serious skin conditions, particularly given New Mexico's status as a skin cancer hot spot. As an academic medical center, the UNM Health Sciences Center's dermatology department is committed to delivering care for the diverse population of the state, while also serving as a hub for education and research. The department's mission is to provide expert, compassionate care, ensuring that even the most difficult dermatological cases are managed with a high degree of professionalism and expertise. The center is designed to be a comprehensive resource, working in collaboration with other specialties to provide a full spectrum of care.
The UNM Department of Dermatology is integral to the broader UNM Health System, which is the only academic health center in the state. This means that patients have access to a network of doctors and specialists, ensuring that their care is not siloed but is part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach. The department's faculty, who are board-certified dermatologists, are involved in training the next generation of skin care providers for New Mexico. This dual role of patient care and medical education means that the clinic is on the cutting edge of dermatological science and best practices. The department's focus on complex cases and its role as a referral center for the entire region is a testament to the high level of expertise available. They aim to address the shortage of dermatologists in the state by training new providers, a mission that directly benefits the local community and surrounding rural areas.
For local residents dealing with serious skin issues, such as suspected skin cancer, the UNM Health Sciences Center represents a critical resource. The clinic is equipped to handle complex dermatologic diseases, benign and malignant skin tumors, and rare conditions. While the provided reviews highlight significant challenges with appointment scheduling and patient communication, it is important to understand the context of an academic medical center that serves as a referral hub for a large, underserved state. This can often lead to long wait times and a high volume of patients, which can impact the patient experience. However, the center's mission and scope of services, particularly its focus on complex cases, are designed to fill a critical need in the state's healthcare landscape.
The University Of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is located at 1021 Medical Arts Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102, USA. This address is situated in a central and well-known medical district of Albuquerque. The location is easily accessible from major roads, making it a convenient destination for patients traveling from different parts of the city and even from other areas of the state. The medical arts area is well-established, with multiple healthcare facilities clustered together, which can be helpful for patients who require care from various specialists. This centralized location simplifies the process for patients who may have multiple appointments or need to visit other departments within the UNM Health System.
Accessibility is a key consideration for a facility of this size and importance. The location on Medical Arts Ave NE offers practical benefits such as proximity to major thoroughfares, which facilitates travel for patients coming from both urban and rural parts of New Mexico. While the reviews point to challenges within the system itself, the physical location remains a logistical advantage. The address is straightforward to find using GPS, and being in a medical-focused zone means that services like parking and public transportation are generally available, even if they can be busy at times. For a facility that serves as a referral center for the entire state, a central and accessible location is a necessity, and the UNM Health Sciences Center fulfills this need.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I received a referral from my doctor to go to the dermatologist because they think I have some spots on my arms and stuff that could possibly be skin cancer and I have other areas. Also the person that answers the phone is so rude. Wouldn't even make an appointment. What good is a referral if the doctor won't see you and your . She said they were only taking cases that are confirmed cancer. Hey what the hell are the rest of us supposed to do?I will be letting kirtland Air Force Base know not to send your location any future referrals. You really deserve no Stars
Jul 11, 2025 · Diana ThurstonHow do I do less that one star? Waited two years to get an appointment, calling weekly, WITH a referral from two doctors. Between the time of finally getting an appointment and the appointment date, the doctor I was supposed to see quit. I was not contacted and told that. Showed up and was pushed on to a resident. Was told to come back for follow up in six months, but they could not give me the appointment because "my doctor" WHO I NEVER SAW was no longer there. Called to schedule the follow up and was told the schedule is closed even though I finally got in their system after two years. So no way to get the actual appointment, period. They will not schedule. AT ALL. You know it's not like we live in a skin cancer hot spot or anything.
Apr 01, 2025 · Amy ODonnellDr Matsumoto is one of my least favorite drs I’ve ever had. This whole department is not my favorite honestly. I understand that places are busy right now and understaffed but that’s no excuse to blatantly ignore my concerns about MY OWN SKIN. I have been trying to get medication from this office for MONTHS and everytime I call no one is willing to let me speak with a doctor and when they fill ay call me back it’s literal weeks later and the person calling me usually has little to no knowledge on my situation and then they get confused when I try and explain to them what’s going on. I would never recommend this office to anyone I care about. They will charge you for anything and everything they can.
Apr 11, 2025 · Cassidy KurowskiDr.Matsumoto, Dr.Artounian, and staff are excellent. I have been diagnosed with a serious skin cancer more than once now and treatment has always been prompt and professional. Supremely grateful for this clinic.
May 30, 2025 · jlrguitar77The care of service is good. However, this is the second year in a row where they coded my annual skin cancer screen appointment as an office visit v. the annual screen. The former is not fully covered by insurance, whereas the latter is. Results in approx. $100 in out of pocket expense. Tried to get it resolved in year one -- total run around and was never able to. Trying to address the new one now. Racket. Shameful.
