Acne is not a problem faced only by teenagers. Hormonally-induced adult female acne is actually the most common form of acne seen in our practice. Antibiotics do not treat the primary cause of the acne but rather treat the symptom of the overproduction of oil which is commonly why it returns after stopping antibiotics. We take a holistic approach to acne management in order to expedite a successful and healthy treatment.

Botox is typically used to treat facial wrinkles. Botox injections are simple and painless. They take less than 10 minutes to deliver their effect and last from 3-5 months.

Contact dermatitis is a rash caused by your skin reacting to a substance it has come into contact with. These are not allergies you are born with. Some of the most common allergens are nickel, cosmetics, additives, preservatives, and plants.

Using a scalpel and a delicate touch, your aesthetician will simply scrape the surface of your skin using light, feathering strokes. This is a great treatment for clients who are pregnant or nursing who want a deep exfoliation, but aren't allowed to use peeling agents on their skin due to the risk of chemicals absorption into the blood stream.

Microblading is a semi-permanent eyebrow procedure in which superficial strokes are made in the skin inside the brows. Filled with a pigment complimentary to your skin and hair color, this procedure gives the appearance of real hair and a fuller brow. Microblading falls under the category of permanent makeup, but it is actually a semi-permanent eyebrow procedure.

Microdermabrasion uses a minimally abrasive instrument to exfoliate your skin removing the thicker, uneven outer layer. This treatment helps to stimulate collagen production, improve hyperpigmentation, lessen the appearance of stretch marks, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and treat acne scars.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment used to rejuvenate the skin. Using a hand-held pen with over 30 needles, this controlled-depth device creates microscopic punctures in the top layer of the skin, stimulating new collagen and elastin production. Once the skin is numbed using topical numbing cream, the needles are inserted in at different depths and speeds which are appropriate for different areas of the face.

Mohs surgery is a surgical technique to remove skin cancer with microscopic control. To ensure clear margins, thin layers of the skin are removed one at a time (think of it like peeling an onion) until the skin cancer is entirely gone. This precise, histologic control of skin cancer removal allows for a higher cure rate when cancers are located in critical areas such as the nose, ears, eyelids, lips. Dr. Retief was trained at one of the nation's top Mohs surgery fellowship programs through the Medical University of South Carolina. During her education, she completed over 2,000 procedures—more than 40% of which were highly-complex skin cancer cases. Moles can be removed from the skin for purely cosmetic reasons or if Dr. Retief is concerned that the discoloration could be the indication of a malignancy.

Seborrheic keratosis are benign skin lesions are the bane of most womens' existence after the age of 40. They come in all shapes and colors--black, gray, brown, silvery, or white. They can be flat or raised, large or small. They are more prominent in sun-exposed areas but can occur anywhere on the body. They normally start appearing in your 40s, but can start at an earlier age. They develop quickly and can disappear just as quickly. While they are likely driven by hormonal changes, they can also result from sun exposure, stress, and diet.

Skin cancer can occur anywhere on the body. The three main types of skin cancer we treat are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. At Retief Skin Center, we recommend that everyone wear a daily moisturizer with a physical sunscreen of 30-45 SPF on their face and neck only. When you are out in the sun for extended periods of time (more than two hours), reapply your sunscreen every two to three hours. For the body, we recommend a sunscreen with an SPF of 15-30, depending on how easily you burn.We have multiple options to treat or remove skin cancer including Mohs surgery, excision, ED&C, cryosurgery, laser therapy, radiation therapy, and topical therapy.

Warts are viruses like the common cold and not dissimilar to cold sores. They can be difficult to eradicate regardless of the treatment employed. At Retief Skin Center, we have multiple solutions to treat your warts including shaving, complete removal, cryotherapy, ED&C, cantherone, VBeam, CO2 lasers, and injectable therapies like Bleomycin. Our providers will evaluate the best treatment options for your unique condition.

Waxing is one form of hair removal that we enlist at Retief Skin Center to remove the hair from its root. New hair will not grow back in the waxed area for four to six weeks, although some people will start to see regrowth in only a week due to some hair being on a different growth cycle. Almost any area of the body can be waxed, including eyebrows, face, bikini area, legs, arms, back, abdomen, knuckles and feet. We use two different types of wax suitable for removing unwanted hair including soft and hard wax. Hard wax does not adhere to the skin as much as soft wax does, making it a good option for sensitive skin or those using Retin-A.
