Mohs and Dermasurgery Unit at MD Anderson Introduce
For residents of Houston and the wider Texas region, having access to world-class medical facilities is a source of great pride and comfort. When it comes to specialized skin health concerns, particularly skin cancer, the Mohs and Dermasurgery Unit at MD Anderson Cancer Center stands out as a leading institution. This unit is not a traditional cosmetic skin care clinic; instead, it is a highly specialized medical facility dedicated to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of skin cancers. It serves as a crucial resource for patients who require advanced dermatologic care beyond what a general dermatologist can provide. For those facing a new diagnosis or seeking expert second opinions, the unit offers a focused, expert-driven approach to a very serious health issue.
The core of the Mohs and Dermasurgery Unit's practice is its commitment to surgical excellence and patient well-being. They specialize in Mohs micrographic surgery, a precise surgical technique used to treat common types of skin cancer. This procedure involves removing thin layers of cancer-containing skin until only cancer-free tissue remains. The process is meticulous and time-consuming, but its high success rate and tissue-sparing nature make it a preferred method for treating skin cancer on cosmetically sensitive or high-risk areas. As part of a major teaching hospital like MD Anderson, the unit operates with a team-based approach. This often includes a chief surgeon, fellows, and other staff doctors, all working together under strict supervision to ensure the best possible outcomes. This collaborative environment ensures that every case benefits from a wealth of knowledge and experience. The rigorous, educational setting is a direct benefit to the patient, as they receive care from a highly monitored and experienced team.
While some patients have noted that the process can be lengthy, with waiting periods for biopsy results, the thoroughness of the procedure is a clear priority. One patient's experience highlighted the team-oriented structure and the chief surgeon’s diligent oversight, which provided a sense of confidence and trust in the care being received. This dedication to precision and quality is a hallmark of the MD Anderson name. It is important for potential patients to understand that as a teaching hospital, multiple doctors may be involved in their care, and this is part of the rigorous, high-standard environment that defines the institution. However, some patient experiences have also highlighted the need for improved communication regarding patient follow-up, especially for those in remission. While the unit excels in active cancer treatment, patients seeking post-treatment monitoring may need to coordinate their long-term care with other providers. This is a critical detail for locals to be aware of, ensuring they have a comprehensive care plan in place.
The Mohs and Dermasurgery Unit is conveniently located at 2130 W Holcombe Blvd 6th Floor, Houston, TX 77030. Situated on the sixth floor, the unit is part of the larger MD Anderson Cancer Center campus, a significant landmark in the Houston medical center area. This location is easily accessible for patients from all over Houston and beyond. The area is well-served by major roads, including the South Loop West Freeway and Main Street, making it reachable by car from various parts of the city. As part of a large hospital campus, there are multiple parking garages and lots available, though it is always wise to plan for potential traffic and parking time. The extensive facilities and clear signage within the MD Anderson campus help guide patients to the correct building and floor, ensuring that the logistical aspects of a visit are as manageable as possible. The central location within the Houston medical district is a significant advantage for locals seeking specialized care.

Mohs and Dermasurgery Unit at MD Anderson Reviews
Spent an hour in procedure room without attention by staff. Once they realized their error, I got priority service and excellent care. Mohs process takes some time to get results back if you only have one item that needs attention. I had two moles being worked on, so they switched surgical sites while the were waiting for results from biopsies. There was always something going on with me. Whole process took about 6 hours. MD Anderson is a teaching hospital so the number of doctors in the room can vary. In my case there were four doctors. There was the chief surgeon assigned to my case, one doctor on a fellowship, one regular staff doctor, and one visiting doctor who was observing while apply for a fellowship at MD Anderson. They were all involved in some way but the chief surgeon was very closely monitoring the process and did the difficult parts of the process. She was very strict with them and was continually asking questions about what they were doing and why. I felt I got excellent care and learned some things about the process.
Aug 29, 2019 · Robert YaffeReally disappointed in this oncology center. My husband has been dealing with advanced skin cancer and is finally in remission. I was told I couldn’t get my husband seen because he doesn’t have active cancer. How are we supposed to find out if he has active cancer without an oncologist? Apparently these Dr don’t follow patients. We moved here from CA and have heard how amazing this facility was. Well we will celebrate his remission victory and go else where!
Feb 17, 2023 · Priscilla G.I can’t sing their praises enough! Unbelievable facility, doctors, and staff!I would suggest anyone needing MOHS Surgery to consider MDAnderson Dermatology first? Dr. Deborah McFarland was outstanding as was each and every member of her staff!(Loved them all!)The process took about 7 hours, so don’t expect an in/out appt. Remember that you are not their only patient that day! Patience is key. All is well that ends well!
Oct 23, 2021 · Sally FosterDr Migden was my champion! He was so thorough and careful with me, going as far to ensure that I was satisfied with the result since I would be living with a large scar on my face for the rest of my life. Since I wasn’t, he worked with me until I was. Now, 4 years later, no makeup on, and the scar is completely invisible, colorless and flat. Highly HIGHLY recommend.

Apr 27, 2019 · Laura GardnerDr MacFarlane performed her Mohs surgery well on my husband but when he asked her about possible need to biopsy a firm hard lymph node nearby she said it was not necessary then and to get a repeat ultrasound in 3-4 months. Bad advice!! He saw a dermatologist one month later near Orlando FL who said it should be biopsied immediately. Turned out to be the same cancer, which by then metastasized to muscle and parotid gland. Why did this happen? Outside of her narrow focus of surgery??
