While the clinic provides a broad spectrum of services for various skin conditions, it's important for local users to understand the specific scope of their offerings and operational procedures to ensure their needs are met effectively. This article aims to provide a factual and informative overview of Brown Dermatology, allowing Rhode Island locals to make informed decisions about their skin health.
Brown Dermatology is conveniently situated at 10, 593 Eddy St, Providence, RI 02903, USA. This location places it within Rhode Island Hospital, a major medical facility in the heart of Providence. Its position within a hospital setting indicates its capacity to handle complex cases and provide integrated care alongside other medical specialties. Public transportation options in Providence may also provide access to the area around Eddy Street, making it reachable for individuals who rely on such services. Being part of the larger Brown Physicians, Inc. network, Brown Dermatology has multiple locations across Rhode Island, including offices in East Providence, Warwick, South County (Wakefield), and at The Miriam Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital, extending its reach and accessibility for patients throughout the state. The main office on Eddy Street serves as a central hub for many of their specialized services and is a key destination for comprehensive dermatological care in the region.
Brown Dermatology provides a vast range of dermatology services, leveraging its academic and clinical expertise. Their offerings cover a broad spectrum of skin conditions and patient needs.
- Medical Dermatology: This encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of over 3,000 skin diseases affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Services include managing conditions like psoriasis, eczema, acne, and various rashes. Their physicians are adept at diagnosing suspicious spots and providing ongoing care for chronic skin conditions.
- Pediatric Dermatology: Specialists at Brown Dermatology offer comprehensive care for infants, children, and adolescents with skin disorders. They diagnose, treat, and manage a variety of pediatric skin diseases, from common to rare and complex cases, with a gentle and child-friendly approach. This includes advanced laser treatments for vascular anomalies in children.
- Laser Surgery and Aesthetic Dermatology: For those seeking cosmetic improvements or laser treatments for skin conditions, Brown Dermatology offers a full array of advanced options. This includes laser treatments for various skin concerns, injectables, chemical peels, and sclerotherapy for spider veins. They aim to help patients achieve desired skin aesthetics safely under the care of medical doctors.
- Mohs and Dermatologic Surgery: Brown Dermatology is a leading center for skin cancer treatment, offering Mohs micrographic surgery, which is known for its high cure rate while minimizing the removal of healthy tissue. Their multidisciplinary team develops tailored treatment plans for various skin cancers, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.
- Dermatopathology: With board-certified dermatopathologists on staff, the clinic offers expert diagnostic services for skin disorders, ranging from rashes to complex cancers. They work closely with clinicians to provide accurate and timely diagnoses.
- Dermatology Specialty Clinics: Brown Dermatology also hosts several specialized clinics for specific conditions, including:
- Contact Dermatitis Center for evaluating rashes due to contact allergy and occupational skin problems.
- Multidisciplinary Cutaneous Oncology Program for complex skin cancers.
- Skin and Musculoskeletal Center (SAM) for patients with combined skin and rheumatologic disorders.
- Transplant Clinic for managing skin cancers and dermatoses in solid organ transplant recipients.
- Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and Excimer Laser treatments.
- Hair Clinic for the evaluation and treatment of hair disorders.
- Skin of Color Clinic, offering expertise and treatment options that consider the unique needs of diverse skin tones.
Brown Dermatology, as an academic medical center, possesses several notable features and highlights that set it apart, although it's crucial to also acknowledge areas that can be challenging for patients, based on available public information.
- Academic Affiliation and Expertise: A primary highlight is its strong affiliation with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. This means patients have access to physicians who are also faculty members, often involved in cutting-edge research and the training of future dermatologists. This ensures a high level of medical knowledge and the application of the latest advancements in dermatology.
- Comprehensive and Specialized Care: The clinic's wide range of services, particularly its numerous specialty clinics (e.g., Contact Dermatitis Center, Mohs Surgery, Pediatric Dermatology, Skin of Color Clinic), demonstrates its capacity to address highly specific and complex dermatological needs. This level of specialization is often not found in smaller, private practices.
- Multidisciplinary Approach: For complex conditions like skin cancer, Brown Dermatology employs a multidisciplinary approach, with teams of specialists collaborating on patient care plans. This integrated approach ensures thorough evaluation and comprehensive treatment strategies.
- Access to Clinical Trials: As an academic institution, Brown Dermatology is often involved in clinical trials, providing patients with potential access to new and experimental treatments that may not be available elsewhere.
However, based on customer reviews, certain operational aspects present significant challenges for patients:
- Appointment Availability: A recurring concern is the difficulty in securing timely appointments, with reports of "a year later" for the "next available appointment" for new patients, even with referrals. This indicates a high demand coupled with potentially limited capacity or an overwhelmed scheduling system.
- Communication Issues: Multiple reviews highlight significant challenges with phone communication, including phones "never answer," rude staff when they do, and calls being "hang up for no reason." This suggests a systemic issue with their patient communication channels.
- Prescription Refill Delays: Patients have reported extreme difficulty in getting prescription refills, with pharmacies faxing requests multiple times without response, and calls to the office leading to unreturned messages or no action. This can be a critical issue for patients requiring continuous medication.
- Referral Requirements: While they state they accept new patients, a strict referral requirement can add another layer of complexity for individuals seeking care, further impacting accessibility.
For appointments or inquiries, Brown Dermatology can be reached at the following contact details. It is important to note the reported challenges in phone communication when attempting to reach them.
- Address: 10, 593 Eddy St, Providence, RI 02903, USA
- Phone: (401) 444-7959
- Mobile Phone: +1 401-444-7959
Brown Dermatology is a suitable option for locals in Rhode Island, particularly for those seeking highly specialized and academic-level dermatological care, but with important caveats regarding operational efficiency. Its integration with Brown University's medical school means access to leading dermatologists, advanced research, and a comprehensive range of services, including complex surgical procedures like Mohs surgery, pediatric dermatology, and a multitude of niche specialty clinics. This makes it an ideal choice for patients with serious or unusual skin conditions that require in-depth expertise and a multidisciplinary approach. For instance, individuals diagnosed with challenging skin cancers or those needing specialized laser treatments would likely find the medical depth at Brown Dermatology invaluable. The presence of dermatopathologists on staff ensures precise diagnoses, which is critical for effective treatment plans. However, for routine dermatological needs, or for patients seeking quick and easy access to care, the reported difficulties with appointment scheduling, phone communication, and prescription refills could pose significant obstacles. Local residents considering Brown Dermatology should weigh the benefits of its extensive medical expertise against the potential administrative challenges. It is best suited for those who prioritize a high level of medical specialization and are prepared for potential delays or persistence in navigating the appointment and communication systems of a large academic medical institution. For Rhode Islanders with complex dermatological conditions requiring the highest level of medical attention, Brown Dermatology's clinical and academic strengths remain a significant asset, provided they are aware of the logistical hurdles that some patients have experienced.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Never answer the phones. In a milltion fraction that they did answer the phones they were rude. Didn’t provide any help and told me to next available appointment is a year later. They say that they accept new patients but must need referral? In addition, they will hang up on your call for no reason.
May 15, 2025 · lili liImpossible to get a simple prescription refilled. Pharmacy faxed refill request multiple times with no response. I called the office after a couple of days, administration said she would message the Dr. Still no response a day later so I called back the next day and was told to leave message on nurse line - they check it every 30 mins and would take care if this. 2 1/2 hrs later nothing done. Called back again to speak with practice manager, was told she would call me back - no call.
Jan 02, 2025 · Liz MartinoI had an Incision today at Brown Dermatology at 375 Wampanoag STE 401 Providence, RII had Dr. Goldbach, Juan Vicente MA & Shannon H.L. MAThey were the best team to work with! They were very knowledgeable they explained everything that they were going to do.We listened to 90’s Music 🎶 during the Incision which music puts you at ease. The procedure took less than 30 minutes. The room was sterile and clean. The team worked well together. Juan has been with the team for 3 & 1/2 years. If I had to choose a team I would not hesitate asking for them again.I am confident that Dr. Goldbach removed all my Basel Cell Carcinoma! I believe I will not to have return for further treatment.Michaele R. Enwright
Nov 20, 2024 · Michaele EnwrightAVOID. My son's pediatrician sent a referral in November of 2023, monthly - bear in mind when I had tried calling myself, I'd been snapped at with "that's not how this works, WE call YOU" and promptly hung up on - and we didn't finally hear back until March when I was called to book an initial appointment for today, July 10th.I'm not stranger to booking appointments with multiple specialists for myself and both of my children and our collective mountain of health issues; this is why I make a point of reading back the time and date at least TWICE, and yes I'll take that written card, and yes I'll take that confirmation call, text, etc. You get the idea.Today (July 10) also happens to be my older son's birthday, and unfortunately, he's been hospitalized for some time, including when I'd made the appointment. Clearly, I wouldn't take an appointment on my older child's birthday unless it were something of great importance like oh, a dermatologist referral I had been waiting months on.Apparently not, as the sentient cardboard applicator of a receptionist couldn't be bothered to make eye contact with me while claiming my appointment was this coming Monday. I'm quite literally physically unavailable on Mondays for appointments; there's no way I would've agreed to this scheduling, and I politely informed her of such. "Well, nothing has been changed HERE." I went further and told her specifically of how I confirmed dates and of today's specific nature, and continuing her lack of eye contact "well you're NEW so we're rescheduling YOUR kind of appointment to January and February." At which I again reminded her that yes, which is why I didn't look the gift horse in the mouth to take any date other than today, my hospitalized kid's birthday, remember?Realizing she clearly wanted me to raise my voice/escalate, (not to mention I also didn't want to contract anything from her likely being a vector species) , I opted not to further engage and wished her the day she deserved while she snottily crowed "sO you're NoT GoInG To ReScHeDuLe" at my back.It also bears noting my son is noticeably special needs, and this was no deterrent from Brown Dermatology's desk staff pouring cement into their clown shoes. I wouldn't put much stock into the quality of clinical care, given that care starts at the front door.I gave a call to my pediatrician as well as my insurance provider when we got home, and making calls to the hospital system later on as I follow through legitimately. But please don't wait months on these people only to let them screw with you too, especially when they just did it today to a little kid.
Jul 10, 2024 · T. RebelloFantastic place! I liked my previous doctor here and this year I had a new one as the previous doctor is no longer there. I saw NP Ashley Wilson and immediately loved her. So comforting, easy to talk to and I felt she listened to me. I never felt rushed or that she had anywhere else to be but with me. I had an in office procedure done and it was simple and painless. Highly recommend!
